Planning and Development: A Reflection on ‘Our’ Neighborhood
As we reflect on the past year and the developments within our small neighborhood, it is clear that progress has been modest. The completion of a public toilet serving the cemetery stands out as a notable achievement. However, we still face challenges, particularly with limited water supply. We find ourselves anticipating a surge of development that may occur in 2026, coinciding with the campaign season for politicians seeking re-election.

Overall, the year has been positive. The rains have benefited our environmentally strained area, leading to a thriving growth of plants, and there have been stable prices for vegetables in the market, especially sukumawiki.
Crime and security levels have remained low despite the high unemployment rate. This can largely be attributed to the strong sense of community, where residents act as each other’s keepers, sharing resources and supporting one another. Our neighborhood is characterized by a close-knit social cohesion.
During the holidays, children have had safe places to play, with no reported incidents of kidnapping or molestation. The streets are well-lit, and the proximity of play areas to businesses allows adults to keep a watchful eye on children, fostering an environment of safety and security.
Domestic violence incidents have decreased, thanks in part to vigilant police units who conduct rescue missions for vulnerable populations, including children and individuals with disabilities. The elderly are also protected by their families. The decline in security concerns suggests that our neighborhood is making progress.
On the construction front, activity has been minimal. With the neighborhood already densely populated, there are no new construction projects underway, and existing apartment buildings remain under-occupied, likely discouraging new investments from developers. Nevertheless, a new church has recently opened its doors, bringing with it new residents.
In summary, our neighborhood has experienced some positive developments this year, characterized by community strength and resilience, even as we continue to face certain challenges.
