The Breather: Scenery in a Small Town
While it is uncommon to find scenic views in unplanned neighborhoods—where designated ‘tourist’ areas dominate towns and cities, and the most frequently renovated spaces are public parks and streets, open spaces can still provide unexpected beauty. Ironic, isn’t it?
As previously mentioned, the Star neighborhood lacks a communal public space, and the few available open areas remain empty, as the term suggests, connected by dirt roads. Nonetheless, these spaces serve as a break for residents, where women often gather for small talk and children play all day, keeping the neighborhood lively and reminding the world that life thrives here. Although it may be unconventional to describe this as a scenic view, it is refreshing to glance out on a lazy day and be reminded of life’s vibrancy through the laughter of children and the chatter of women filling the air with gossip. This liveliness contributes to the emotional well-being of the community, particularly for introverted residents whose only connection to the outside world comes through their windows.
Those who use these open spaces find entertainment and scenic experiences in the passersby and the flow of traffic on the nearby highway. In this way, they observe fashion trends, analyze movements, and keep an eye on which neighbors are absent, fostering a sense of community watch while enjoying the spectacle of people and vehicles.
Is this a typical description of scenery? Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, and there is so much of the world to discover beyond just the physical environment; the social environment is equally rich.
