We often consider land a scarce resource, indeed, but have investors explored Illeret?
The town’s challenges as previously highlighted include a lack of healthcare personnel. Given this, one can only imagine the state of animal care. However, the surprisingly healthy cattle, with minimal disease despite the lack of veterinary care indicates the land’s fertility and potential for investment.
Illeret presents numerous unexplored opportunities. While it may not achieve city status immediately, some adjustments to abandoned projects could stimulate development and potentially lead to municipal status.
Entrepreneurs could consider the value chain process, such as establishing a meat factory to supply various towns and regions. This could create employment, despite the substantial initial capital investment, and potentially lead to long-term business success. Some residents own motorbikes, but fuel access is a challenge, as they must travel to North Horr to obtain it and store as reserves; thus, a filling station presents a viable business opportunity. Drought-resistant vegetables, like okra, can thrive in Illeret, offering farmers a chance to profit from green vegetable sales.
The land is vast, but developers are hesitant to invest in Illeret due to poor transport networks, water scarcity, and the absence of interdependent businesses that can support each other where one business’s by-products can serve as another business’s raw materials. For instance, vegetable stalks could be used as animal feed, while animal skins could be used for tanning by another business.
It is often said that Africa is rich in resources, and this is certainly true. However, the current government can choose to maximize the use of its existing resources or continue to rely on donations and grants, which are often mismanaged for personal gain, commonly known as embezzlement or corruption.
Illeret is rich and ripe for exploration. This is a call for political goodwill.
